Key takeaways
Divide weekly spend by CPA for the purchases on hand.
About 50 events per ad set per week is a reported guide, not a performance promise.
It caps how many ad sets can reach that volume in the week.
Meta, as Adwize reports, names an ad set budget for per-ad-set control, very different audience sizes, or different optimisation goals or bid strategies.
Count the week's purchases and lock the share a fair test needs. What that lock does not use can stay on Advantage+ campaign budget, the control buyers still call CBO, when those ad sets can share it. The dollar figures use about $50,000 a month. The same division works in the ad account's own currency.
Three budget controls, and a 20% middle option
Adwize, a vendor, reports a 9 October 2026 reading of Meta's Help Center in which Ads Manager offers three budget strategies. Advantage+ campaign budget lets Meta move the whole campaign budget across ad sets in real time. Ad set budget sharing applies only to campaigns that do not use a campaign budget. It keeps a budget on each ad set, but up to 20% of the daily budget can move to other ad sets when they have better opportunities. Ad set budgets stay where you put them until you move them by hand.
If the test needs matching spend, ad set budget sharing does not meet that requirement, because it is allowed to move money.
Meta's own Advantage+ campaign budget page describes the campaign-level control as automatically managing the campaign budget across ad sets for results at the lowest cost. Eligibility on that page requires every ad set to use the same budget type, the same bid strategy and standard delivery. Ad sets on different bid strategies, such as Cost per result goal beside Highest volume, cannot share one campaign budget.
How many ad sets the week can fund
Jetfuel, citing Meta Business Help Center, says about 50 optimisation events are counted per ad set, not per campaign, and that an ad set which cannot accumulate 50 of that event inside a week can be stuck in Learning Limited. About 50 is a reported guide to stable delivery, not a promise of a lower CPA.
The guide is weekly, so convert the month before you count ad sets. This example treats the budget as $50,000 exactly, spread evenly: $50,000 × 12 / 52 is $11,538 a week. Weekly purchases are that spend divided by CPA, counting only whole purchases the dollars cover.
At a $40 CPA, $11,538 covers 288 purchases ($11,520) and leaves $18 unused in the sum. Five ad sets at about 50 events take 250 of those purchases, with 38 left. A sixth would need 300 in the week. At a $100 CPA the same week covers 115 purchases ($11,500), with $38 unused. Two ad sets take 100. A third would need 150.
Global Group One reads the same guide as a funding check: raise the budget until it can buy roughly 50 results a week at the current cost, and combine ad sets that target similar people so the money sits in fewer places. If purchases are too rare for that, it suggests optimising for a more frequent event, such as a lead or an add to cart. The 50 then counts that event.
Tests spend the same purchases as scaling
The sum below sizes the fair-test share from two numbers you already have: how many new concepts the team can ship, and how many results you require before you will judge one. That evidence bar is yours. The 50-event guide is a separate check on delivery.
Take the $40 example, with 288 purchases in the week. Suppose the team ships two concepts and will not judge either before 40 purchases. Count that bar against this week only when both tests collect those purchases in the same seven days, at the same $40 used to count the 288. Two concepts then take 80 purchases, $3,200, out of the 288, leaving 208. Spread evenly, 208 could cover at most four ad sets at about 50 events each (4 × 50 = 200), with 8 left. The remainder sits on campaign budget, which can move spend towards the ad sets that return more results, so the week may fund fewer than four scaling ad sets. Before the tests were locked, the same even spread could cover five ad sets.
Raise the evidence bar to the learning guide and the lock gets larger. Two test ad sets at about 50 purchases take 100 purchases and $4,000, leaving 188. Spread evenly, those 188 could cover at most three scaling ad sets at about 50 events each (3 × 50 = 150), with 38 left, and not a fourth, which would need 200. Four concepts at that bar lock 200 purchases and $8,000, leaving 88, which cannot fund two further ad sets to the same guide.
A campaign budget can move money off a test ad set rather than holding those shares level. Adwize illustrates that uneven split with a $100 a day campaign and three separate ad sets: past site visitors, a lookalike and a broad audience. Those figures are an illustration, not measured account data. On Monday the lookalike finds purchases at $18 and the other two at $30. Meta may give the lookalike $70 and split the rest. If each concept needs the same chance to spend, assign the ad set budgets yourself. Adwize reports that Meta's Advantage+ campaign budget best practices include using ad set spend limits sparingly.
When the budget should stay on the ad set
Adwize reports Meta's advice to use an ad set budget when you need control per ad set, when audience sizes differ a lot, or when ad sets use different optimisation goals or bid strategies.
Adwize says that with two active ad sets, Meta may spend most of the money on one if that gives the best overall result, and that ad sets with the largest audiences tend to receive the most. Applied here, a small retargeting pool can lose spend to a larger ad set.
Campaign budget and Advantage+ sales status
Adwize reports that narrowing the budget, audience or placements too far turns Advantage+ off for that section, for example by using several ad sets without campaign budget or by excluding a placement. Several ad sets with their own budgets are that first example, so Advantage+ can turn off for that section.
When to run the sum again
Recalculate the weekly purchases and the hand-assigned share when one of these inputs moves.
- CPA has changed, so the same dollars buy a different number of events.
- The team is shipping more or fewer concepts, or your evidence bar has changed.
A higher CPA shrinks how many ad sets the week can fund to the reported guide. More concepts, at the same bar, enlarge the locked share and shrink the scaling pool by those same purchases.
